The importance of fire safety
Thousands of people annually suffer injuries in home fires in the U.S. The majority of fire-related deaths (about 70 percent) are caused by smoke inhalation of the toxic gases produced by fires. Fires and burns are a leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children ages 14 and under.
Every home should have a fire detector in every room, as well as a pack of batteries to power them. It is important for everyone in the house to have a clear plan of what to do if there is a fire- specifically, the safest and quickest routs out of the house. Children in the home should be well-informed too. There shouldn’t be a single person who is caught off-guard and doesn’t know what to do in the case of a fire emergency. It is also a good idea to practice safe fire-prevention habits.
